How the night goes

    Setup before guests arrive

    Elena arrives 60 minutes early and sets up wherever your coordinator wants the table — usually at the edge of cocktail hour, where there's a queue but no bottleneck.

    Guests stop for a photo

    A reference photo takes a few seconds. Then they go straight back to the party — nobody sits for a portrait, and nobody spends their evening in a line.

    Elena paints

    about six minutes per portrait in ink and watercolor. Guests drift back to watch, which is half the reason to book this.

  4. 4

    A pop-up gallery for pickup

    Finished portraits go up on a display as they dry, each in a protective sleeve, and guests collect them on the way out.

    Optional: studio portraits

    Anyone missed on the night can be painted afterward from photos and mailed to you — $200 per 10. Worth adding if there are people you want covered regardless of who reached the table.

How many hours do we actually need?

The honest answer depends on your guest count, and we would rather put the arithmetic in front of you than quote a number that sounds better than it paints. A watercolor portrait takes about six minutes, which is about 10 an hour. Nobody paints a hundred of them in an evening.

Two levers move these numbers. Painting guests from mid-thigh up instead of full length is meaningfully faster and costs nothing. A second artist roughly doubles the rate. Tell us your guest count on the inquiry and we will model both before you commit to a package.

Where we work

The portrait table packs into a car, so it goes wherever your venue is. We work across Los Angeles and Southern California, most often in Malibu, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Calabasas, Palos Verdes, Downtown LA, Topanga, Hollywood, and Long Beach.

Travel is included within 30 miles of West Los Angeles, then $2 per mile beyond. Santa Barbara, Ojai, Temecula wine country, Orange County, and Palm Springs are all regular trips.

Frequently asked questions

How much do live guest portraits cost?
$1,295 for 3 hours, which is the minimum booking, and $400 for each additional hour. That covers all materials, the display, sleeves, the couple's own portrait, and travel within 30 miles of West LA. There is no separate setup fee.
How many of our guests will actually get a portrait?
About 10 an hour, so three hours is roughly 30 portraits. We'd rather give you that number plainly than promise one nobody can paint. For a 200-guest wedding, portraits are a delight that a portion of the room takes home, not a favor at every place setting — unless you add a second artist, which roughly doubles the rate.
Is there a way to get through more guests?
Two, and both work. Elena can paint guests from mid-thigh up instead of full length, which is noticeably faster and still captures the outfit — it costs nothing and is worth choosing if your list is long. Or add a second artist, which roughly doubles throughput. Say the word on the inquiry and we'll model both against your guest count.
What happens to guests you don't get to?
Elena can take reference photos home and paint them in the studio afterward — $200 for a batch of 10, mailed to you once they're done. You pick the photos, so you can cover the people who matter most whether or not they made it to the table. Add it when you book or after the wedding, whichever you prefer.
Do guests have to sit still while you paint them?
No — and it's the thing people are most surprised by. A reference photo is taken at the table in a few seconds and guests go straight back to the party, then collect the finished portrait later. Nobody spends their evening posing.
How many people can be in one portrait?
Two comfortably, three at a push. Past that, the faces get too small to look like anyone. Families with several children usually do better with two portraits than one crowded one — and a group of three or more takes about twice as long, which comes out of the same hours.
Are the portraits dry before guests take them home?
Watercolor at this size dries in a few minutes, and each portrait goes into a clear sleeve. Guests can put them in a bag or a jacket pocket on the way out without any trouble.
What do you need from our venue?
A table and two chairs in a well-lit spot, in shade if we're outdoors, plus somewhere nearby to display finished portraits as they dry. Please arrange the table and chairs through your venue or planner — we bring the paints, paper, sleeves, and the display, but not the furniture. It's worth confirming early, since some venues charge for an extra table.
How do we book, and what are the payment terms?
A signed contract and a 25% non-refundable retainer hold the date; the retainer comes off the total. The balance is due 14 days before the event, and can be split across payments if you'd rather spread it. About 3 weeks out we'll have a planning call to settle timing, placement, and the shot list.
Do you travel outside Los Angeles?
Travel is included within 30 miles of West Los Angeles. Beyond that — Santa Barbara, Ojai, Temecula, Orange County, Palm Springs — it's $2 per mile past the first 30, shown on the proposal up front. Events far enough out to need a hotel night are quoted before you book, never after.
Do you do non-wedding events?
Regularly. Corporate holiday parties, brand activations, bar and bat mitzvahs, quinceañeras, showers, and milestone birthdays all work. The format doesn't change; the pacing does.
Do you carry insurance?
Yes — general liability, with a certificate naming your venue as additional insured on request. Send us the venue's requirements as early as you can, since most LA venues want it weeks ahead.
