Downtown weddings are the most architecturally interesting in the city and the most technically demanding to paint. Restored theatres, brick warehouses, and rooftop bars are all dramatic and all dimly lit, usually with heavily colored uplighting. That is a solvable problem, and the payoff is a canvas that could only have been made in that room.

Worth knowing before you set a ceremony time

Low light, colored light

This is the defining condition of a DTLA wedding. Venues here are lit for atmosphere — deep magentas, ambers, and pin-spots, with very little ambient. Judging color under that is impossible by eye, so we work under a small daylight-balanced lamp clipped at the easel. It is the size of a paperback, points at the canvas rather than the room, and is the single reason the finished piece does not come out orange.

Downtown venues have the most complex load-in in the city — freight elevators, dock times, and street parking that does not exist.

Planning notes for Downtown LA

Freight elevators and dock windowsMost DTLA venues have one freight elevator shared by every vendor, on a schedule. Send us the window your coordinator assigns and we will hit it; missing it can mean an hour's wait.
Parking has to be arrangedThere is effectively no usable street parking downtown on a Saturday evening. A vendor spot, a validated garage, or a loading-zone window — any of the three works, but one of them needs to exist.
The lamp, alwaysEvery downtown venue described above needs the daylight-balanced lamp. It is small and unobtrusive, but tell your lighting designer it will be there so nobody is surprised.

Our venue is very dark. Can you actually paint in it?

Yes — this is routine. The lamp at the easel handles it. The one ask is that the easel position is not the darkest corner of the room; somewhere with a sightline to the dance floor and a little ambient light makes for a better night all round.

Can you paint the skyline into the background?

If it is visible from the setup position, yes — and on a rooftop it is usually the best part of the composition. Worth deciding before the day so the canvas proportions can be planned around it.

Do you handle your own parking downtown?

We arrange it, but we need to know what is available. If the venue offers a vendor space, claim one; if not, tell us which garage and it goes into the quote rather than being billed afterward.
